Description:
Andvaranaut, meaning "Andvari's gift," is the name of the ring which Loki (LINK) steals from the dwarf Andvari (LINK), the last piece of his treasure hoard which the dwarf requested specifically to keep. Loki's refusal of letting him keep the single, small ring out of all the vast treasure Loki is taking brings Andvari to lay a deadly curse upon the ring and the rest of the treasure, which will be the death of whoever possesses them. The name "Andvari's gift" is thus ironic, and the use of -naut in this sense for something taken by force recurs throughout medieval Icelandic literature.
