Description:
Gideon Ofnir is a Tarnished, like the player-character, and is the de facto leader and most senior member of the Roundtable Hold, a refuge for Tarnished warriors to share information and improve equipment on their quest to become Elden Lord. Gideon's epithet, "the All-Knowing," refers to his never-endering quest to accumulate knowledge, which he considers to be the surest way of becoming Elden Lord. This title also goes hand-in-hand with his second name, "Ofnir," which is one of the many names of the god Óðinn (Odin). In Skáldskaparmál, a section of the Prose or Younger Edda attributed to Snorri Sturluson, there is a þula ("poetic list, enumeration") titled Óðins nöfn ("Odin's names"), listing exactly that, names of Óðinn, in verse form. The meaning of the name changes based on how the word is glossed. If the initial 'o' is long (ó), then Ófnir means roughly "inciter" or "instigator," in the sense of someone who incites conflict or instigates battle; if the o is short (o), it means rather "weaver." Ofnir is also attested as the name of one of the serpents that lie beneath Yggdrasil, forever biting its twigs along with Níðhöggr gnawing on its roots. This is attested in the poem Grímnismál as well as the þulur called Orma heiti ("names of wyrms/serpents"). The name Ofnir has the same ambiguity based on whether the initial 'o' is taken as long or short described above; Ofnir is also a heiti, or poetic name, for a serpent in general. No links to Medieval Citations yet.
